Synopsis – What to Expect from “Smart People”
Smart People is a 2008 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Noam Murro and written by Mark Poirier. It stars Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ellen Page, and Thomas Haden Church.
The movie follows Lawrence Wetherhold (Dennis Quaid), a widowed English professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Lawrence is highly intelligent and successful, yet he is rude, aloof, and emotionally distant from his family and students. His daughter Vanessa (Ellen Page) is a high school senior who is also highly intelligent, but feels neglected by her father.
Lawrence’s brother Chuck (Thomas Haden Church) is a slacker who lives off his brother’s money and has recently been released from rehab. Lawrence’s nephew, James (Ashton Holmes), is a high school student who is struggling academically and has a strained relationship with his father.
When Lawrence meets Janet Hartigan (Sarah Jessica Parker), a physician and former student of his, they quickly form a bond. Janet helps Lawrence reconnect with his family and open up to his students.
Meanwhile, Vanessa is accepted into Stanford University and falls in love with a classmate, a wealthy and popular jock named Scott (Scott Porter). Despite their differences, the two develop a strong relationship.
