Synopsis/Plot
Sling Blade is a 1996 American drama film written and directed by Billy Bob Thornton, who also stars in the lead role. The movie tells the story of Karl Childers, a mentally disabled man who is released from a psychiatric hospital, where he has been held since childhood, after he is found to be innocent of the murder of his mother and her lover.
Karl returns to his hometown, where he is taken in by a kindly man, Frank Wheatley. Karl finds work in a local garage and befriends Frank’s son, Frank Jr., and his friend, Vaughan Cunningham. Karl also meets the local pastor, who takes an interest in Karl’s well-being.
Karl’s past catches up with him when he meets Doyle Hargraves, the abusive father of Frank Jr. and Vaughan. Doyle is the man who was responsible for the murder of Karl’s mother and her lover. Karl is determined to take revenge on Doyle and begins to plan his murder.
Meanwhile, Karl’s friendship with Frank Jr. and Vaughan grows, and he finds himself becoming increasingly protective of them. He also strikes up a relationship with a local woman, Linda, who is a single mother.
