Synopsis/Plot
Silkwood is a 1983 American biographical drama film directed by Mike Nichols and starring Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell, and Cher. The film tells the true story of Karen Silkwood, a worker at the Kerr-McGee plutonium plant in Oklahoma, who died in a suspicious car accident while investigating alleged wrongdoing at the plant.
Karen Silkwood (Meryl Streep) is a single mother who works at the Kerr-McGee Cimarron Fuel Fabrication Site, a plutonium plant near Crescent, Oklahoma. She lives with her boyfriend Drew (Kurt Russell) and her housemate Dolly Pelliker (Cher). Karen is a union activist who becomes increasingly concerned about safety issues at the plant, including the lack of safety showers and the use of contaminated gloves. She begins to investigate the plant’s activities, and discovers that the plant is not following safety regulations.
Karen’s investigation leads her to contact a reporter from The New York Times, who agrees to meet her and hear her story. She also meets with a lawyer who advises her to gather evidence to prove her claims. She begins to collect documents and take photographs of the plant, but is later found dead in a suspicious car accident
