Synopsis/Plot
Silence is a 2016 historical drama film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Jay Cocks and Scorsese, based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Shusaku Endo. It stars Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Liam Neeson, and Tadanobu Asano.
The film is set in 17th century Japan and follows two Portuguese Jesuit priests who travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor. Upon arriving in Japan, the priests witness the persecution of Japanese Christians at the hands of the ruling Tokugawa shogunate. The priests must decide between renouncing their faith or suffering the consequences of their religious beliefs.
The film is a powerful exploration of faith, doubt, and the cost of standing up for one’s beliefs. It is a deeply personal film for Scorsese and is his first film to feature a non-English language cast. The film is shot in stunningly beautiful locations and features a powerful score by composer Kim Allen Kluge.
Silence has been praised for its powerful performances and thoughtful exploration of faith and spirituality. It has been nominated for numerous awards and is considered one of Scorsese’s best films.
