Synopsis – What to Expect from “Shenandoah”
Shenandoah is a 1965 American Civil War drama directed by Andrew V. McLaglen and starring Jimmy Stewart.
The film tells the story of a Virginia widower and his family during the Civil War. Charlie Anderson (Jimmy Stewart) is a prosperous Virginia farmer who is determined to keep his family out of the Civil War. He is a man of strong principles, and he refuses to take sides in the conflict.
Charlie and his family live a peaceful life on their farm until the war comes to their doorstep. When Confederate soldiers come to their farm to conscript his sons into the war, Charlie refuses and his sons flee. In the midst of the chaos, his youngest son, James, is accidentally shot and killed.
Charlie is grief-stricken and determined to avenge his son’s death. He embarks on a journey to find his sons and bring them home safely. Along the way, he encounters a variety of characters, including a Confederate deserter, a Union soldier, and a freed slave.
As Charlie travels, he is forced to confront the realities of war and the devastating effects it can have on innocent people. He also learns how to forgive and how to accept that some things are beyond his control. In the end, he is able to reunite his family and bring them home safely.
