Synopsis/Plot
Shame is a 2011 British-American drama film directed and co-written by Steve McQueen and starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan. Set in New York City, the film follows Brandon Sullivan, a man struggling with his inner demons and his inability to control his sexual urges.
The film opens with Brandon, a successful thirty-something businessman, living a solitary life in his Manhattan apartment. He works out daily, has an active sex life, and spends most of his free time alone. It is soon revealed that Brandon is a sexual addict, and his life begins to unravel as he struggles to control his impulses.
When his wayward younger sister, Sissy, arrives unannounced and stays with him, Brandon’s life spirals out of control. He is unable to control his sexual compulsions, and his relationships with women become increasingly chaotic and destructive. He is also unable to connect with Sissy, who is struggling with her own issues and trying to find her place in the world.
As his life continues to unravel, Brandon is forced to confront his own shame and guilt, and eventually, his addiction. The film is a powerful exploration of the destructive nature of addiction, and how it can take
