Charlie is an imaginative and inquisitive young girl who loves to read mystery novels. One day, her uncle Charlie Oakley (Joseph Cotten) arrives to stay with the family. She soon discovers that her uncle is the notorious “Merry Widow” murderer who has been terrorizing the town.
Charlie is torn between her loyalty to her uncle and her duty to bring him to justice. She is also afraid of the consequences of his capture, as it would bring shame to her family. She decides to keep her suspicions to herself and investigate further.
As her investigation progresses, Charlie discovers her uncle’s dark past and his true motive for coming to the town. She also realizes that her uncle has been manipulating her family to protect himself from the authorities.
