Synopsis/Plot
Seven Years in Tibet is a 1997 American biographical war drama film based on the 1952 book of the same name written by Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer on his experiences in Tibet between 1944 and 1951 during World War II, the interim period, and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s invasion of Tibet in 1950.
The film stars Brad Pitt as Heinrich Harrer, a Austrian mountain climber who is imprisoned by the British in India for leaving the country without a proper visa. After escaping from the prison, he makes his way to Tibet, where he befriends the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. While in Tibet, Harrer is exposed to a new way of life, and his outlook on the world is forever changed.
The movie follows Harrer’s journey as he learns about the Tibetan culture and its people, and helps to protect the Dalai Lama from the invading Chinese forces. He also discovers the beauty of the Tibetan landscape, and the kindness of its people.
The film also stars David Thewlis, BD Wong, and Mako as members of Harrer’s climbing team, and features a soundtrack composed by John Williams.
