Synopsis – What to Expect from “Semi-Pro”
Semi-Pro is a 2008 American sports comedy film directed by Kent Alterman and starring Will Ferrell, Woody Harrelson, André Benjamin, and Maura Tierney. The film is set in the 1970s and tells the story of Jackie Moon (Ferrell), a one-hit wonder who uses his fame and fortune to purchase a basketball team in the fictional American Basketball Association (ABA).
The film follows Jackie’s attempts to lead the team, the Flint Tropics, to victory in the ABA playoffs and gain a merger with the National Basketball Association (NBA). Along the way, Jackie must deal with the team’s lack of talent, his own lack of basketball knowledge, and the fact that the ABA is on the brink of collapse.
The film begins with Jackie Moon, a one-hit wonder who has used his fame and fortune to purchase the Flint Tropics, a failing basketball team in the ABA. Jackie is determined to make the team a success and gain a merger with the NBA, so he hires a coach and begins to recruit players.
At first, the team struggles, and the players lack talent and motivation. However, the team begins to turn things around when Jackie’s friend, Clarence “Coffee” Brown (Harrelson), joins the team. With Coffee’s help, the team begins to gel and starts winning games.
