Synopsis – What to Expect from “Selma”
Selma is a 2014 American historical drama film directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Paul Webb. It is based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by James Bevel, Hosea Williams, Martin Luther King, Jr., and John Lewis. The film stars David Oyelowo as King, Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon B. Johnson, Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King, and Tim Roth as George Wallace.
The film opens with Martin Luther King, Jr. (Oyelowo) and other civil rights leaders preparing for the Selma to Montgomery march, which is intended to be a peaceful demonstration to gain voting rights for African Americans in the South. The march is opposed by Alabama governor George Wallace (Roth) who orders state troopers to block the march. The troopers attack the marchers, leading to the death of a young African American man. In response, President Lyndon B. Johnson (Wilkinson) orders the FBI to investigate the incident.
Meanwhile, King and his team continue to organize the march and attempt to gain the support of the White House. They are met with resistance from both the government and the public. Despite the opposition, King and his team are determined to continue the march and eventually gain the support of the President.
On March 7, 1965, the march begins with thousands of people participating. The marchers are met with hostility from the state troopers, but they continue
