Synopsis – What to Expect from “Secrets & Lies”
Secrets & Lies is a 1996 British drama film directed by Mike Leigh. The film follows Hortense, a successful black optometrist, who discovers that the white woman she assumes to be her mother is in fact her biological aunt. This revelation leads Hortense, her family, and her newfound biological mother to confront the secrets and lies that have been hidden for years.
The film begins with Hortense, a successful black optometrist, celebrating her 36th birthday with her family. Her mother Cynthia, father Maurice, and sister Roxanne are all in attendance. After the celebration, Hortense receives a call from an unknown woman who claims to be her biological mother. Hortense is shocked and confused by the woman’s claim and decides to meet her.
At the meeting, Hortense discovers that the woman, named Monica, is in fact her biological mother. Monica explains that she was a young, single mother when she gave birth to Hortense and was unable to keep her. She then gave Hortense to Cynthia, who she believed could provide a better life for her daughter.
Hortense is overwhelmed by the news and struggles to come to terms with her newfound identity. She is also faced with the difficult task of telling Cynthia, who she has always believed to be her mother, the truth. Hortense eventually decides to tell Cynthia, who is devastated by the news.
The film then follows the struggles and emotions of Hortense, Cynthia, Maurice
