Searching for Sheela is a 2021 Indian documentary film directed by Shakun Batra, which follows the story of Ma Anand Sheela, a former secretary of the controversial Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. The film explores Sheela’s journey from her early years as an ambitious young woman in India, to her rise to power as the leader of Rajneesh’s commune in Oregon, USA, and her eventual downfall.
The film begins with Sheela’s childhood in India, exploring her upbringing as a traditional Hindu girl and her dreams of becoming a successful businesswoman. As she grows older, her ambitions become more ambitious and she eventually moves to the United States, where she is hired as the personal secretary of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. She quickly rises to power as the leader of the Rajneesh commune in Oregon, where she is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the commune.
However, her time at the commune is not without controversy. Sheela is accused of multiple criminal activities, including attempted murder, arson, and immigration fraud. As the FBI begins to investigate the commune, Sheela is forced to flee to Europe, leaving behind her life in Oregon.
