Scarlet Street is a 1945 American film noir directed by Fritz Lang and starring Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, and Dan Duryea. The film tells the story of a middle-aged, unappreciated cashier who is lured into a life of crime by a beautiful young woman.
Christopher Cross (Robinson) is a cashier in a New York City department store, living a mundane life with his nagging wife. He dreams of becoming an artist, but his wife refuses to support his aspirations. One night, he meets a beautiful young woman, Kitty March (Bennett), and is instantly smitten. When he discovers that Kitty is a streetwalker, Chris decides to support her financially and take her away from her dangerous lifestyle.
Kitty and her boyfriend, Johnny (Duryea), take advantage of Chris’s naivety and convince him to help them in a series of robberies. They use Chris’s artwork to frame him for the crimes, and Chris is arrested and sentenced to prison. Kitty and Johnny, meanwhile, continue to live off of Chris’s money.
While in prison, Chris learns to paint and discovers a newfound appreciation for life. Upon
