Synopsis/Plot
Saving Mr. Banks is a 2013 American biographical drama film directed by John Lee Hancock and starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson. The film tells the story of Walt Disney’s 20-year effort to obtain the rights to the novel Mary Poppins from its author, P. L. Travers, played by Thompson.
The film begins in 1961 with P.L. Travers, an elderly, reclusive author, being courted by Walt Disney to adapt her novel Mary Poppins into a film. Travers is initially resistant to the idea, but agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s proposal. During the negotiations, Travers is determined to protect her character and her story from Disney’s commercialization.
In flashbacks, the film reveals the source of Travers’s reluctance. As a young girl living in rural Australia, Travers was close to her father, a banker named Travers Goff (Colin Farrell). Goff was a dreamer and a storyteller, but his alcoholism and reckless behavior caused the family to suffer financially and emotionally.
