Saving Face is a 2004 romantic comedy-drama film directed by Alice Wu.
The film follows Wilhelmina (Michelle Krusiec), a Chinese-American lesbian, and her traditional mother (Joan Chen), who is recently widowed and pregnant. Wilhelmina is a successful surgeon living in New York City and is in a relationship with a dancer, Vivian (Lynn Chen). Wilhelmina’s mother, Ma (Joan Chen), is unaware of her daughter’s sexual orientation and is shocked when she finds out.
When Ma arrives in New York, Wilhelmina is forced to come out to her, and Ma is initially appalled by her daughter’s lifestyle and tries to set her up with an eligible Chinese bachelor. Wilhelmina is determined to make her mother understand her, and the two begin to build a relationship.
