Synopsis/Plot
Santa Sangre is a 1989 Mexican-Italian surrealist horror film written and directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky. The film follows Fenix, a young man who is released from a mental hospital after being institutionalized for witnessing his parents’ murder at the hands of a cult. He is taken in by a circus, where he reunites with his childhood love, Concha, and his armless mother, who is obsessed with him and forces him to participate in her bizarre schemes.
The film is an exploration of the psychological effects of trauma, as Fenix is haunted by his past and struggles to make sense of his present. The narrative is interspersed with surrealist sequences, including flashbacks to Fenix’s childhood and dreamlike sequences featuring religious iconography. The film’s visuals are heavily influenced by the Mexican artistic tradition, and its soundtrack features a mix of traditional Mexican music and experimental jazz.
Santa Sangre is a unique and powerful exploration of the human psyche, and its themes of trauma, guilt, and redemption have earned it a cult following. The film has been praised for its dreamlike visuals and memorable soundtrack, as well as its exploration of the darker aspects of human nature.
