Synopsis – What to Expect from “Salvador”
Salvador is a 1986 American drama-thriller film directed by Oliver Stone and starring James Woods, Jim Belushi, and Michael Murphy. Set in the early 1980s during the Salvadoran Civil War, the film follows the story of Richard Boyle (Woods), an American photojournalist who goes to El Salvador to document the war.
The film begins in San Francisco, where Boyle is living a life of drugs and alcohol, and struggling to make ends meet. Despite his financial woes, he is determined to go to El Salvador to document the civil war that is raging in the country. After convincing his friend, Dr. Rock (Belushi), to accompany him, the two travel to El Salvador.
Once there, Boyle quickly finds himself in the middle of the conflict, witnessing firsthand the violence and atrocities of the war. He also meets a young Salvadoran girl named Maria (Elpidia Carrillo), who has been separated from her family and is trying to find them. Boyle and Rock decide to help her, and the three of them set out on a journey to find her family.
Along the way, Boyle and Rock witness the horrors of the war, and the brutality of the Salvadoran military. Boyle also begins to develop feelings for Maria, but is conflicted due to his own personal demons. Eventually, the trio finds Maria’s family, and Boyle must decide if he will stay in El Salvador or return home.
