Synopsis – What to Expect from “Safe”
Safe is a 1995 drama film directed by Todd Haynes and starring Julianne Moore. The movie follows the story of Carol White (Moore), a housewife living in the Los Angeles suburbs who is suddenly struck by a mysterious illness.
Carol is a typical housewife living in the suburbs with her husband, Greg (Xander Berkeley), and their young daughter, Ruby (Mara Hobel). She lives a seemingly perfect life, but something is amiss. After an incident at a local mall, Carol begins to suffer from a mysterious illness that leaves her feeling exhausted and weak.
Carol’s husband and doctor are unable to diagnose her illness, and she begins to feel increasingly isolated and alienated from her family and friends. She eventually finds solace in a group of fellow sufferers, who call themselves the “Wise Use Movement” and believe that the environment is the cause of their affliction.
Carol begins to attend meetings and rallies with the group, and her health gradually improves. However, her newfound strength is soon challenged when she discovers that the Wise Use Movement is a front for a far more sinister agenda.
As Carol struggles to uncover the truth about the group’s motives, she must also confront her own fears and doubts about her illness and her place in the world. Safe is a powerful exploration of the power of belief, and the courage it takes to stand up for what you believe in.
