Synopsis – What to Expect from “Running with Scissors”
Running with Scissors is a 2006 black comedy-drama film directed by Ryan Murphy and based on the memoir of the same name by Augusten Burroughs. The film follows the tumultuous life of Augusten Burroughs (Joseph Cross) as a young boy growing up in the 1970s.
The film begins with Augusten’s parents, Deirdre (Annette Bening) and Norman (Alec Baldwin), going through a bitter divorce. Deirdre is an eccentric and unstable woman who is unable to take care of her son, so she decides to give him away to her psychiatrist, Dr. Finch (Brian Cox).
Dr. Finch is a strange and eccentric man who lives in a run-down house with his family, including his wife Agnes (Jill Clayburgh), daughter Hope (Gwyneth Paltrow), and son Neil (Joseph Fiennes). At first, Augusten is hesitant to live with the Finch family, but he eventually begins to adjust to his new life.
Augusten quickly realizes that Dr. Finch is just as eccentric and unstable as his mother. He is also subjected to the bizarre behavior of the other members of the family, including Hope’s promiscuity and Neil’s obsession with the occult.
Augusten also becomes close with Agnes, who helps him cope with the chaos of his life. Despite her own mental instability, Agnes is the only person who truly understands Augusten and provides
