Synopsis/Plot
Rules Don’t Apply is a romantic comedy-drama set in 1958 Hollywood. The film follows the story of aspiring actress Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins) and her driver Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenreich) as they both try to make their dreams come true in the world of show business. Marla, a devout Baptist from Virginia, has been hired by the eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes (Warren Beatty) to be his latest starlet, while Frank is determined to make it as a business man and leave his small town roots behind.
The two soon form an unexpected bond as they navigate the strange and often humorous world of Hollywood. Marla struggles to balance her religious beliefs with the demands of her new job, while Frank finds himself increasingly attracted to Marla, despite the fact that her contract with Hughes forbids her from dating anyone.
Meanwhile, Hughes’ odd behavior and increasingly erratic decisions begin to cause chaos in the lives of Marla and Frank. As their relationship deepens, the two must decide whether to follow their dreams or their hearts.
