Synopsis/Plot
Roman J. Israel, Esq. is a crime drama written and directed by Dan Gilroy. The movie stars Denzel Washington as the titular character, a driven, idealistic defense attorney whose life is upended when a turbulent series of events challenge the activism that has defined his career.
Roman J. Israel is a brilliant but socially awkward lawyer who has spent the last three decades fighting for the rights of the oppressed. He is a man of principle and integrity, and a staunch believer in justice and the power of the law. But when his long-time mentor and partner suffers a heart attack, Roman is forced to take a job at a prestigious law firm. His new role requires him to compromise his ideals and take part in unethical practices, and his struggle to reconcile these two conflicting worlds leads him down a dangerous path.
As Roman navigates his newfound reality, he is forced to confront his own personal demons, as well as the systemic injustices that plague the legal system. He must also grapple with his own identity as a black man in a predominantly white profession. The film paints a vivid and complex portrait of a man struggling to reconcile his beliefs with the realities of the world around him.
