Synopsis – What to Expect from “Rio Grande”
Rio Grande is a classic western directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. The film takes place in the late 1800s, and follows the story of a cavalry captain, Kirby Yorke (John Wayne), who is sent to the Rio Grande to protect settlers from the Apache Indians.
Yorke is reunited with his estranged wife, Kathleen (Maureen O’Hara), who is now a nun living on the post. He is also reunited with his son, Jeff, who is now a lieutenant in the cavalry. Jeff is in love with a young woman, but his father forbids them to marry.
Meanwhile, the Apache have been raiding the settlers and the cavalry is sent out to protect them. On one of the raids, Yorke is captured and held hostage by the Apache chief, Vittorio (Ben Johnson). Through a series of events, Yorke is able to make peace with the Apache and convince them to return to their own land.
The cavalry is then sent to the Rio Grande to protect the settlers from a band of Mexican outlaws. Yorke and his men are able to fight off the outlaws and save the settlers. In the end, Yorke and Kathleen are reunited and Jeff and his love are allowed to marry.
