Synopsis – What to Expect from “Reversal of Fortune”
Reversal of Fortune follows the story of Sunny von Bülow (Glenn Close), a wealthy socialite from Newport, Rhode Island, who is found comatose in her bedroom after a mysterious incident. Her husband, Claus von Bülow (Jeremy Irons), is accused of attempted murder and put on trial.
The movie follows the trial as Claus’s legal team led by Alan Dershowitz (Ron Silver) attempt to prove his innocence. Through a series of flashbacks, the audience is shown events leading up to the incident. It is revealed that Sunny had been in a long-term affair with a doctor (Fisher Stevens), and the affair had been discovered by Claus.
The defense team’s strategy is to prove that Sunny had attempted suicide, and that Claus had nothing to do with it. In order to prove this, they must show that Sunny was clinically depressed and had a history of attempting suicide. The team interviews Sunny’s family and friends, and discovers that she had been taking medication for depression.
The defense team also looks into Claus’s financial records and discovers that he had been making large payments to a Swiss bank account. It is revealed that these payments had been made in order to provide financial support to Sunny’s lover.
The trial culminates in a dramatic climax, with the jury finally delivering a verdict of not guilty. The audience is left to ponder the true nature of the events that led up to Sunny’s coma
