The film begins with Bob Rueland, a successful architect, who is happily married to his wife Elizabeth. The couple is expecting a child, and Elizabeth is overjoyed. However, Elizabeth dies in a tragic car accident, leaving Bob devastated.
Bob eventually moves on with his life, but he still feels a void in his life. He meets Grace Briggs, a waitress at a local restaurant, and the two become friends. Meanwhile, Grace is dealing with her own problems. She is a widow and has been unable to conceive a child.
When Grace learns that Bob is in need of a heart transplant, she volunteers to donate her own heart to him. After the surgery, Bob and Grace begin to develop feelings for each other, and they eventually fall in love.
However, Bob soon discovers that Grace is the same woman who received his wife’s heart. This revelation causes Bob to feel conflicted, as he is torn between his feelings for Grace and his loyalty to his late wife.
