Synopsis/Plot
Repulsion is a 1965 psychological horror film directed by Roman Polanski and starring Catherine Deneuve as Carol, a young Belgian woman living in London. The film follows Carol’s descent into madness as she struggles with her repulsion towards men, and her fear of being alone.
The film opens with Carol living in an apartment with her sister, Helen. Carol is a withdrawn and introverted woman, and her sister’s presence does not seem to help her mental state. As the film progresses, Carol’s mental state deteriorates further as she is overcome with fear and paranoia. She begins to hallucinate and have visions of a creepy old man stalking her.
The film takes a turn for the worse when Carol’s sister leaves town for an extended period of time. With no one to look after her, Carol’s mental state continues to decline. She begins to imagine that the walls of her apartment are closing in on her, and she starts to have terrifying nightmares.
The film culminates in a scene of horrifying violence, as Carol finally gives into her repulsion and kills a man who tries to force himself on her. The film ends with Carol in a catatonic state, having finally succumbed to her mental illness.
