Synopsis – What to Expect from “Renaissance Man”
Renaissance Man is a comedy-drama released in 1994 starring Danny DeVito and Gregory Hines. The movie follows Bill Rago (DeVito), an unemployed advertising executive who is hired to teach an army class of misfits. The class is made up of a diverse group of students who have all failed to succeed in the traditional educational system.
At first, Bill is completely overwhelmed by the students’ lack of discipline and disrespect. But as he begins to get to know them, he realizes that they are actually intelligent and capable of learning. He decides to use unconventional methods to teach the class, such as having them act out Shakespeare plays and creating projects to help them learn.
As the class begins to make progress, Bill’s teaching methods are met with resistance from the military brass and the students’ parents. But with the help of his friend, Colonel Richard Hauser (Hines), Bill is able to continue teaching the class and help them succeed.
As the semester progresses, Bill grows close to the students and they begin to open up to him. In the end, the class passes their final exams and Bill is able to help each of them find success in their own way. The movie ends with Bill and the students celebrating their success.
