They are accompanied by a robot, AMEE (Autonomous Mapping Exploration and Evasion), which is programmed to explore the planet and assist them in their mission.
When they arrive on Mars, the team discovers that the terraforming mission has failed and the planet is now a barren wasteland. They soon discover that the planet is inhabited by a species of intelligent, humanoid creatures. After a brief skirmish with one of these creatures, the team learns that the creatures are actually the remnants of an ancient Martian civilization that was destroyed by a cataclysmic event millions of years ago.
The team soon discovers that the cataclysmic event was caused by a runaway black hole, which is now slowly consuming the planet. In order to save the planet, the team must find a way to stop the black hole before it destroys the planet.
