Synopsis – What to Expect from “Red Joan”
Red Joan is a 2018 British drama film directed by Trevor Nunn and written by Lindsay Shapero. It stars Judi Dench as Joan Stanley, a British woman who is arrested for espionage and treason after a long-hidden past is revealed.
The film begins in 2000, when Joan Stanley (Judi Dench) is arrested by MI5 for supplying classified information to the Soviet Union during the Cold War. As she is interrogated, we are taken back to 1938, when Joan is a young student at Cambridge University. She meets a young Russian physics student, Leo Galich (Tom Hughes), and the two quickly fall in love. When Leo is sent back to Russia, Joan is left heartbroken and begins to question the morality of the political climate of the time.
Years later, during World War II, Joan is recruited by the British government to work on the British atomic bomb project. She soon meets a mysterious Russian physicist, Sonya (Tereza Srbova), who introduces her to the Soviet Union’s own atomic bomb project. Joan is torn between her loyalty to her country and her love for Leo. She decides to help the Soviets by providing them with the information she has learned from the British project.
Back in the present, Joan is brought to trial for treason and espionage. She is sentenced to ten years in prison. Despite her age, she refuses to cooperate with the authorities and insists on her innocence. As she serves her
