Synopsis/Plot
Rebecca is a 1940 American romantic psychological thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based on the novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier. The film stars Laurence Olivier as the brooding, aristocratic widower Maxim de Winter and Joan Fontaine as his new bride, the young and naïve Mrs. de Winter.
The film begins at the Monte Carlo casino, where the wealthy widower Maxim de Winter meets a young woman, whom he eventually marries. Upon returning to his estate, Manderley, they are met by Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper. Mrs. Danvers is obsessed with the memory of Maxim’s first wife, Rebecca, who died in a sailing accident. Mrs. Danvers attempts to sabotage the second Mrs. de Winter’s efforts to make a place for herself in her new home.
As the second Mrs. de Winter slowly unravels the mystery surrounding Rebecca’s death, she discovers that Rebecca was far from perfect. She was manipulative and cruel, and had a string of lovers. When the truth is finally revealed, Mrs. de Winter is able to find her own place in Manderley and in Maxim’s heart.
Rebecca is a classic Hitchcock film
