Synopsis – What to Expect from “Ragtime”
Ragtime is a 1981 American drama film directed by Milos Forman, based on the novel of the same name by E. L. Doctorow. The movie follows the story of three families living in New York City in the early 1900s.
The story begins with the arrival of an African-American family, the Coalhouse Walkers, from Virginia to New York City. Coalhouse Walker, Jr. (Howard E. Rollins, Jr.) is a talented musician and a proud black man. He and his wife Sarah (Debbie Allen) quickly become popular in their Harlem neighborhood.
Meanwhile, the affluent white family, the Stuyvesants, live in New Rochelle. Father Stuyvesant (James Olson) is a wealthy industrialist who is struggling to keep his family together. Mother Stuyvesant (Mary Steenburgen) is a free-spirited woman who is uninterested in her husband’s money and prestige. The Stuyvesants’ daughter, Evelyn (Elizabeth McGovern), is a rebellious young woman who is drawn to Coalhouse’s music and the life of the Harlem neighborhood.
The third family is the Jewish immigrant family, the Levys. Tateh (Mandy Patinkin) is a tailor who dreams of a better life for his daughter, Sarah (Brooke Adams). He works hard to make this dream come true and eventually succeeds, although at a cost.
