Synopsis – What to Expect from “Rabbit-Proof Fence”
Rabbit-Proof Fence is a 2002 Australian drama film based on the book Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence by Doris Pilkington Garimara. It tells the true story of three Aboriginal Australian girls who were taken from their families in 1931 and sent to the Moore River Native Settlement, north of Perth, in order to be assimilated into white culture.
The film follows the story of 14-year-old Molly Craig (Everlyn Sampi) and her younger sister Daisy (Tianna Sansbury) and cousin Gracie (Laura Monaghan). The three girls are taken from their families in the small town of Jigalong, Western Australia, and sent to the Moore River Native Settlement, a camp that was set up to “re-educate” Aboriginal children.
At the camp, the girls are subjected to harsh treatment and are forced to abandon their traditional way of life. Molly, Daisy, and Gracie decide to escape and make the long journey back to Jigalong. With the help of an Aboriginal tracker, Moodoo (David Gulpilil), they follow the rabbit-proof fence, a 1,500-mile-long fence that was built to keep rabbits away from the wheat fields of Western Australia.
On their journey, the girls face many obstacles, including the harsh desert terrain, police officers who are searching for them, and a group of white men who are out to capture them. Despite all
