Synopsis – What to Expect from “Pygmalion”
Pygmalion is a classic romantic comedy directed by Anthony Asquith and Leslie Howard, released in 1939. The movie stars Leslie Howard as Professor Henry Higgins, a professor of linguistics and phonetics, and Wendy Hiller as Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl.
The story begins as Eliza is selling flowers on the streets of London and is approached by Professor Higgins who makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can turn Eliza into a proper lady in six months. Eliza agrees and moves in with Higgins and Pickering and begins her transformation.
Higgins begins by teaching Eliza to speak in a more refined manner and to have better manners. He also teaches her to dress properly and to behave in a more genteel manner. Eliza is initially resistant to this transformation, but she gradually learns to enjoy it.
As Eliza’s transformation progresses, Higgins and Pickering take her to a ball where she is mistaken for a duchess. Eliza is overjoyed by the attention and admiration she receives and realizes that she has truly been transformed.
However, the transformation has also caused a rift between Higgins and Eliza. Higgins is still treating her as a student, while Eliza is beginning to feel like a real lady. Eliza eventually leaves Higgins and moves in with a friend.
Higgins is devastated by Eliza’s departure and realizes that he has grown to care for
