Synopsis – What to Expect from “Pride and Prejudice”
Pride and Prejudice is a 1940 romantic drama film based on the 1813 novel of the same name by Jane Austen. The film follows the Bennet family, a family of five daughters living in a small village in England in the early 19th century. The family’s matriarch, Mrs. Bennet, is desperate to find husbands for her daughters, especially the eldest, Elizabeth.
The film follows the Bennet family as they navigate the social conventions of the time and their own personal relationships. Elizabeth meets the wealthy Mr. Darcy, but is initially put off by his pride and aloofness. Meanwhile, Elizabeth’s younger sister, Jane, falls in love with Mr. Bingley, a friend of Mr. Darcy. As the two couples grow closer, Elizabeth is forced to confront her own feelings for Mr. Darcy and her own prejudices.
The film culminates in a dramatic ball, where Elizabeth finally realizes her true feelings for Mr. Darcy and the two declare their love for each other. In the end, the Bennet family’s fortunes are restored as the two couples are happily married. Along the way, Elizabeth and her family learn to look beyond appearances and social conventions, and to embrace true love.
