Synopsis/Plot
Pretty Baby is a 1978 American drama film directed by Louis Malle and starring Brooke Shields, Keith Carradine, and Susan Sarandon. Set in 1917, the film tells the story of a 12-year-old girl named Violet (Brooke Shields) who lives with her prostitute mother (Susan Sarandon) in a Storyville brothel in New Orleans. When a wealthy man (Keith Carradine) arrives at the brothel to purchase a photograph of Violet, he becomes smitten with her and decides to take her away from the brothel and raise her as his own.
The film follows Violet’s journey as she navigates the transition from her former life to her new one. As she adjusts to her new surroundings, she must also come to terms with the fact that the man who has taken her away from the brothel is in fact her biological father. The film explores themes of innocence, exploitation, and sexuality as Violet comes of age in a world of conflicting values and expectations.
