The movie opens with Mary Griffith (Weaver) as a young mother living in the suburbs of California in the 1970s. She is a devout Christian and is raising her four children with the same values. As Bobby grows up, he struggles to reconcile his faith with his homosexuality. He attempts to pray away his feelings but eventually comes out to his family. Mary is horrified and refuses to accept him, believing that homosexuality is a sin. Bobby is devastated by his mother’s rejection and begins to fall into depression.
He attempts to take his own life but is unsuccessful. Mary eventually comes to terms with Bobby’s sexuality and begins to accept him. She joins a support group for parents with gay children and begins to fight for gay rights in her community.
