Synopsis – What to Expect from “Postcards from the Edge”
Postcards from the Edge is a 1990 American comedy-drama film directed by Mike Nichols and starring Meryl Streep, Shirley MacLaine, Dennis Quaid, Gene Hackman, and Richard Dreyfuss.
The story revolves around Suzanne Vale (Meryl Streep), a young actress whose life is in disarray due to her struggles with substance abuse. After a drug overdose lands her in the hospital, Suzanne is forced to move in with her mother, Doris Mann (Shirley MacLaine), a famous actress who is also struggling with her own personal demons.
At first, the two women clash and Suzanne is determined to get her life back on track without her mother’s help. However, as they spend more time together, Suzanne begins to understand her mother’s pain and struggles and the two eventually bond.
Meanwhile, Suzanne is also struggling to make it as an actress and she finds herself caught between her controlling agent Jack Faulkner (Gene Hackman) and her lover, the director, Carlotta Valdez (Annette Bening).
As Suzanne navigates her way through the Hollywood scene, she must also confront her own inner demons and learn to accept herself and her mother for who they are. In the end, Suzanne and Doris learn to appreciate one another and their relationship is strengthened.
