Synopsis/Plot
Pope Joan is a 2009 historical drama film directed by Sönke Wortmann and starring Johanna Wokalek as Pope Joan, the legendary female pope of the Middle Ages. The film tells the story of Joan, a young woman who disguises herself as a man and rises through the ranks of the Catholic Church to become the first and only female pope.
Joan is a brilliant and ambitious young woman from Germany who is determined to break free of the oppressive society she was born into. She disguises herself as a man and travels to Athens to study at a renowned academy. There, she quickly stands out among her peers and begins to attract the attention of the school’s dean, Gerold (David Wenham). After Gerold discovers Joan’s true identity, he helps her ascend the ranks of the Church and eventually become Pope.
However, Joan’s reign as Pope is short-lived as the Church discovers her true identity and she is forced to flee.
