Synopsis – What to Expect from “Please Stand By”
Please Stand By is a 2018 American comedy-drama film directed by Ben Lewin and written by Michael Golamco. It stars Dakota Fanning as a young autistic woman named Wendy who runs away from her group home to deliver her 500-page Star Trek script to a writing competition in Hollywood.
The film begins with Wendy, a young woman in her twenties with autism, living in a group home in San Francisco. She loves Star Trek and has a dream of writing a script for the show. She decides to take a chance and enter a writing competition in Hollywood, and sets off on a journey to get her 500-page script to the competition.
Along the way, Wendy meets a variety of characters who help her on her journey. She meets a young hitchhiker, a kindly truck driver, a motel clerk, and a security guard. They all help her in different ways, from giving her a place to stay to helping her with her script.
Wendy eventually makes it to Los Angeles, but finds that the competition has already ended. She decides to go to the studio where Star Trek is filmed and delivers her script in person. Although the security guard initially does not want to let her in, he eventually relents and Wendy is able to deliver her script.
The film ends with Wendy returning to the group home, having achieved her dream of delivering her script. She is welcomed back with open arms and is celebrated for her accomplishment.
