Synopsis/Plot
Pleasantville is a 1998 American fantasy comedy-drama film written, co-produced, and directed by Gary Ross. The film stars Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon, William H. Macy, Joan Allen, and Jeff Daniels. Set in the 1950s, the film tells the story of two modern teenagers, David and Jennifer, who are transported into a 1950s black-and-white television sitcom called Pleasantville. As they struggle to fit in, David and Jennifer gradually change the lives of the people of Pleasantville, in particular the lives of their parents, Bud and Mary Sue Parker.
The film begins with a TV repairman, named “Mr. Johnson”, fixing a broken television set belonging to the Parker family. When the TV is turned on, the family is transported into the fictional town of Pleasantville, which is a black-and-white television sitcom. David and Jennifer, the two modern teenagers, find themselves in the roles of Bud and Mary Sue Parker, the teenage children of the family.
