Synopsis – What to Expect from “Playing for Time”
Playing for Time is a powerful drama set during the Holocaust. Vanessa Redgrave stars as Fania Fenelon, a Jewish cabaret singer from Paris who is sent to Auschwitz in 1944.
At the camp, Fania is selected to join a female orchestra made up of other prisoners. The orchestra is led by Alma Rosé, a renowned musician and the niece of the infamous Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler. Fania is initially resistant to the idea of playing music for her captors, but she eventually gives in and begins to play.
As the war progresses, the orchestra is moved to different concentration camps and is forced to play for the Nazi officers. Despite the horrific conditions, Fania and the other musicians manage to find solace in their music.
The movie follows Fania’s journey as she attempts to survive the horrors of the Holocaust. Along the way, she forms strong friendships with the other members of the orchestra and finds strength in her music.
The movie culminates with the orchestra’s liberation from Auschwitz. Fania is reunited with her family, but is forever changed by her experiences in the camp. Playing for Time is a powerful and heartbreaking story of survival, friendship, and the power of music.
