Picnic at Hanging Rock is a 1975 Australian mystery drama film directed by Peter Weir. The plot follows a group of schoolgirls from an Australian girls’ boarding school who vanish at Hanging Rock while on a Valentine’s Day picnic, and the subsequent effects on the school and local community.
The film begins with a group of girls from the Appleyard College boarding school in Victoria, Australia, preparing for a picnic at Hanging Rock, a large sandstone formation in the bush. On the day of the picnic, headmistress Mrs. Appleyard (Rachel Roberts) accompanies the students, along with a few of the college staff. After lunch, four of the girls – Miranda, Irma, Marion, and Edith – wander off into the rock.
The remaining girls and staff search for the missing girls, but no trace of them can be found. As the search continues, the townspeople become increasingly anxious and suspicious of one another. Meanwhile, the headmistress becomes increasingly unhinged and begins to suspect that something supernatural has taken the girls.
The search eventually leads to a shocking discovery: the girls’ clothing and belongings are found in a cave, but the bodies are missing. The mystery deepens as the investigation into the girls’ disappearance continues, and the townspeople become more and more convinced that something supernatural has taken the girls.
The film culminates with a shocking conclusion that leaves the audience with more questions
