Synopsis – What to Expect from “Phat Girlz”
Phat Girlz is a 2006 American comedy film written and directed by Nnegest Likké. The movie stars Mo’Nique, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Godfrey, and Kendra C. Johnson.
The movie follows Jazmin Biltmore (Mo’Nique), a plus-sized woman who is struggling to find her place in life. She works at a beauty salon in Los Angeles, but dreams of becoming a fashion designer. She is constantly ridiculed for her size and is constantly told she should lose some weight.
When Jazmin meets a wealthy Nigerian doctor, Dr. Tunde (Jimmy Jean-Louis), she is instantly smitten. Dr. Tunde is looking for a wife and Jazmin is convinced that he is the man for her. She decides to travel to Nigeria with her best friend, Stacey (Kendra C. Johnson), to meet him and to try to win his heart.
In Nigeria, Jazmin and Stacey discover that Dr. Tunde is already engaged to a much thinner woman and that he only invited Jazmin to Nigeria to be a part of his business venture. Jazmin is devastated and decides to return home.
On her journey home, Jazmin meets a group of plus-sized women who have come together to form a support group. Jazmin is inspired by their stories and decides to stay in Nigeria to help the group.
