Synopsis/Plot
Pete’s Dragon is a 1977 American live-action/animated musical fantasy film directed by Don Chaffey, produced by Jerome Courtland and Ron Miller, and written by Malcolm Marmorstein. The film stars Sean Marshall, Helen Reddy, Jim Dale, Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons, and Shelley Winters.
The film tells the story of a young orphaned boy named Pete who is taken in by a family of lighthouse keepers on the coast of Maine. He befriends a dragon named Elliott, whom only he can see. Together, they embark on a series of adventures, including meeting a traveling circus, trying to evade a local doctor who wants to capture Elliott, and ultimately finding Pete’s long-lost parents.
The film features a mix of live-action and animation, with Elliott being animated. The animation was done by Disney’s animation department, and was praised for its quality.
The film was a moderate box office success, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Candle on the Water”. It has since become a cult classic, and is considered a Disney classic.
