Synopsis – What to Expect from “Peeping Tom”
Peeping Tom is a psychological thriller released in 1960 directed by Michael Powell. The film follows the story of Mark Lewis, a young man who works in a film studio as a focus puller. He is a shy and introverted figure who lives alone in a small apartment and spends his spare time making experimental films.
Mark is a disturbed individual, plagued by a traumatic childhood experience involving his father, a psychologist who used him as a guinea pig for his experiments. As an adult, Mark has developed a voyeuristic obsession with filming women, and begins to stalk and film his female neighbours.
When one of his neighbours, Helen Stephens, discovers Mark’s secret, she is initially horrified, but eventually becomes intrigued by him. She begins to spend more time with Mark, and the two develop a strange relationship.
Meanwhile, Mark’s voyeurism leads him to commit a series of murders, and soon he becomes the prime suspect of the police. He begins to spiral into a state of paranoia and fear as he tries to evade capture.
The film culminates with Mark’s ultimate downfall, as he is finally apprehended by the police and sent to a psychiatric hospital. Peeping Tom is an unsettling and powerful exploration of voyeurism, obsession and mental illness.
