The film opens with Fischer as a young boy, living in Brooklyn, New York, and struggling to fit in with his peers. His mother, Regina, encourages his interest in chess, and Fischer soon finds himself excelling at the game. As Fischer’s fame grows, he becomes increasingly reclusive and paranoid, alienating those closest to him.
Fischer’s growing notoriety attracts the attention of the KGB, who offer him a chance to play against Spassky in a World Championship match. Despite his fears, Fischer agrees and travels to ReykjavÃk to face the Soviet champion. As the match progresses, Fischer’s mental state deteriorates, and the pressure of the Cold War intensifies.
