Synopsis/Plot

Passing is a 2020 American drama film directed by Rebecca Hall. The film follows the story of two African-American women who pass for white in 1920s New York City. Irene Redfield (Tessa Thompson) and Clare Kendry (André Holland) were childhood friends in the segregated South, but have since gone their separate ways. Irene is living a comfortable life in Harlem with her husband Brian (Alexander Skarsgård) and their two children. Clare, on the other hand, has married a wealthy white man, John Bellew (Stephen Root), and is passing as a white woman.

The two women reunite and quickly rekindle their friendship, but their relationship is complicated by the fact that Clare is passing as white and Irene is still living as a black woman. Irene is initially appalled by Clare’s deception, but eventually comes to understand her friend’s motivations. As their friendship grows, Irene and Clare must confront the harsh realities of racism and the danger of being exposed.

Passing is a powerful exploration of identity and the lengths people will go to in order to fit in. The film is beautifully shot and features strong performances from the two leads.
