Paris Is Burning is a 1991 documentary film directed by Jennie Livingston. It chronicles the ball culture of New York City and the African-American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities involved in it.
The film follows the lives of several individuals who are part of the ballroom culture in New York City. It focuses on the drag queens and trans women who form the core of the scene, and the struggle they face due to their gender identity and sexual orientation.
The film opens with a brief introduction to the ballroom scene, which is a form of competitive performance art where people compete in categories such as vogueing, runway, and drag. The participants come from many different backgrounds, including African-American, Latino, and LGBT communities.
The main focus of the film is on the stories of several individuals, such as Pepper LaBeija, a fierce drag queen who is the founder of the House of LaBeija; Venus Xtravaganza, a young trans woman who dreams of becoming a famous model; Dorian Corey, an elder of the ballroom scene; and Angie Xtravaganza, the mother of the House of Xtravaganza.
The film follows these individuals as they prepare for the balls, compete in them, and interact with each other in the ballroom culture. It also shows how the ballroom scene has been a source of acceptance and community for the LGBT community, and how
