Parenthood is a 1989 comedy-drama film directed by Ron Howard, starring Steve Martin, Mary Steenburgen, Dianne Wiest, Jason Robards, Rick Moranis, and Martha Plimpton.
The film follows the Buckman family as they struggle to cope with the demands of modern day life. Gil and Helen Buckman (Steve Martin and Mary Steenburgen) are an affluent couple living in the suburbs of Chicago with their two children, Kevin (Jason Robards) and Sarah (Martha Plimpton). Gil is a successful businessman who is struggling to find time to spend with his family, while Helen is a stay-at-home mom who is feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work she has to do.
Meanwhile, their daughter Sarah is a rebellious teenager who is struggling to find her place in the world. She is determined to break free from her parents’ expectations and live life on her own terms. Sarah’s brother Kevin is a shy and awkward young man who is struggling to find his place in the world.
The Buckman family is further complicated by the presence of Gil’s brother Frank (Rick Moranis), an eccentric and irresponsible free spirit who is constantly getting into trouble.
When Frank’s daughter Julia (Dianne Wiest) arrives on the scene, she brings with her a whole new set of problems for the Buckmans to deal with. As the family struggles to come to terms with Julia’s presence, they
