Synopsis/Plot
Paperhouse is a 1988 British fantasy drama film about a young girl named Anna who escapes her troubled home life by entering a surreal dream world. Anna is a lonely 11-year-old girl who lives with her single mother and her younger brother. She is bullied by her classmates and her home life is strained due to her mother’s mental health issues. To cope, Anna begins to draw a house in her sketchbook, and soon finds herself entering this imaginary world.
In this dream world, Anna meets a mysterious boy named Marc, who is trapped in a wheelchair. Together, they explore this strange landscape, which is filled with surreal imagery and strange creatures. As they travel, they encounter a variety of strange characters, including a giant rat, a talking cat, and a ghost.
Anna and Marc eventually reach the Paperhouse, a strange and beautiful place made of paper. Here, they discover the truth about Marc’s condition and the dark forces that have been preventing him from leaving the dream world. As they confront these forces, they learn more about themselves and the power of friendship.
