After his wife leaves him, Richard moves to a small town in upstate New York where he meets Abby (Emma Stone), a precocious teenager who becomes a mentor to him.
The two form an unlikely friendship, with Abby helping Richard to get back on his feet and to regain his confidence in his writing. As Richard starts to make progress with his book, he also begins to find solace in his friendship with Abby. However, their relationship is tested when Abby’s own life begins to unravel as she struggles with her parents’ divorce.
